Movement is a gift for Generations to come
Think about it, if you are over 30, your grandparents were probably OLD. Mine were. My granny was funny as all get out, but she was always old with her size 11 red orthopedic shoes and beige Grand Marquis. Part of the reason that my mother is not like this is because she is reacting to that kind of old. She was not going to be that kind of old. She is adventurous and lively and young at heart. What my kids see of her shifts their perspective. It is also different from what my kids’ kids’ generation will see in us.
As you move now, you are writing history. The kind of history I want to write is the kind where people don’t slowly get old and sit down and then die. That is the story that I was told and that is the story that I refuse to tell.
I went to visit a kindergarten in the area and basically what a few teachers told me is that kids eventually learn to sit still, by the time they are in 5th grade, they can sit for a couple of hours. They said it like it is the best thing in the world. Haven’t we done so well to tame the wild out of our children? Side smile. Oh yes, we will be tolerant of children who need to move more, for now but by the time they are older we will have broken them, the subtext says.
Now I know I’m in the extreme of this view - for now. But I care about our health as a culture and I am tired of lack of movement being an acceptable and standardized way to live. Now more than ever, with a cadre of young to raise up, I am championing movement. I will fight for it, for the children now and the children to come. For the goldeners who have been told they have no other choice but to sit down and die. I will fight for them to regain normal natural movement.
For all of us in between, I will share regular movement ideas about how to get moving in your life, for the long run. The more you move, the more alive you become. We become the casualties of a life without movement. And not just us, but all of those who come after us genetically and have stasis imprinted on their cells. I am here as a mover, a teacher and a fucking cheerleader to get you moving your body more, in all the ways you can.
