Everything is Connected
The first time you start moving in a new way, you invite your body, mind and heart into a relationship where change is possible. You are no longer tied to yourself as you once knew it. Maybe that is a step forward and maybe the new set of rules feel confining. Changing one small thing in the way you move may bring up a whole lot of other shit.
Everything is connected - how we see ourselves, how we move, and the story we tell each other about who we are. To change one piece of that, how we move, will affect how the other pieces fit together and function.
Changing how you move can look like a lot of different things. My favorite place to start is with the breath. It’s always available and it’s free. Connecting to your breathing will radically shift how you experience your life.
Breath awareness exercise:
Pause for a moment and turn your attention to your breathing mechanism. Put your hands on the front of your ribs and feel how they move when you breathe in and out. You don’t have to do anything else. As you get more experienced with breath awareness, you don’t have to use your hands to feel from the outside. A good goal for this is to feel for the movement of your ribs from the inside. Notice all of the ways that your ribs move (or don’t move) as you breathe. Do this for 3 minutes. Make it your only job. If you get distracted, start again. This is the beginning of mindfulness, or an awareness practice.
To move with engagement of body, mind and heart is to learn not just to survive but to thrive in moments of challenge. Instead of feeling pain and running to escape, we teach ourselves to stay and be curious, we teach ourselves to be in the moment.
